Dog Lovers Heaven!

Last weekend I went to the Family Pet Expo in Orange County. I couldn’t make it on Friday–the only day when guests could bring their four-legged friends–so alas, Seamus did not accompany me. It’s okay though. I think he would have been overwhelmed. I know I was! So much to see. Just about every breed of dog has a rescue group present with dogs up for adoption. Naturally I made a bee-line to Beagles ‘N Buddies–and dumped some money into their donation jar and then cooed over these babies:

And I really wanted to take this little guy on the right home with me. He was super sweet and he had a deformed front leg, which didn’t seem to bother him at all, but it made me want him all that much more.

I managed to resist (Seamus is enough dog for our household currently), but as I roamed around the Pet Expo I also managed to donate all of my cash and then proceeded to spend crazily with my debit card. So many fun things for me and Seamus (I’ll probably share a few later, since we’re trying out a few things).  And… look who I got to meet!

Yes, I stood in line for a photo with Uggie from The Artist and his little buddy is Suzie Q who plays “Jim” on Mike & Molly. And of course you recognize Stella from Modern Family right? So cute!

I also did some serious work. No, really. Well, kind of “work” but definitely serious. I’m trying to figure out what the best diet is for Seamus to give him the best chance of combating this cancer thing that seems to be our nemesis. I walked around talking to as many of the food/ nutrition/ supplement exhibitors as I could but it actually got a little overwhelming. I’m going to be reading up. Right now I’ve got him on supplements that I got from The Dog Cancer Vet and fish oil pills in addition to his high protein/ low carb diet that he’s always been on (carbs feed tumors…we learned that in the last go round).  So I’m curious what you all feed your dogs. Any suggestions? My new goal is for Seamus and I both to be eating better and exercising more. Not difficult, right? Right??!!

Yeah, it’s a miracle I didn’t come home with a new beagle.

  1. Quik note from the mom about nutrition – been meaning to let you know (probably already do)
Fresh veggies are really good for combatting cancer in dogs just like with people. Almost ANY, especially finely chopped but mine get broccoli, cauliflower, carrots (they love these the most even in bigger pieces.

Gotta get ready for work now.

Kim-yes, we’re definitely adding veggies. Seamus was a skeptic at first but he does love the carrots now. He spits out the broccoli, but I’ll try chopping it up and sprinkling on his food. That’s a good idea. He’ll probably inhale it like a good beagle does! We’re both eating lots of veggies now!

  2. Hi Teresa…
.I wanted to let you know we feed Sophie a raw food diet ie: meat, veggie’s etc. She is now 5 going on 1…and I truly believe it’s because she’s not eating kibble. She has super energy and eats anything except turkey…that’s Ok..can’t like everything. Everyone comments on how youthful and spritely she acts and once again I believe it’s because of her diet…no processed anything!

Our last dog Jessie was brought up on kibble and ended up with Cushings Disease and I always felt that something wasn’t right about feeding animals kibble. I may be way off base but when you watch you beloved pet die from a disease you want to prevent this from happening again. It took us 4 years before we could have another pet and Sophie picked us!

I hope this gives you an idea to consider…we never thought about it until Sophie was over 1 year and her breath smelled not to mention flatulence. We went online and found a retailer of raw diet food near us and called. We were sold immediately and now we just buy at the markets and find good deals and a good range of meats. Sophie is happy with her meals. Good luck and hugs to Seamus….imagine seeing Stella..that would have made our day!!

Ron– did you follow any specific plan (or even recipes?) for Sophie’s diet? She is gorgeous and very youthful so you are definitely doing something right! I’ve added more veggies, but Seamus is still on the high protein kibble–while I’m on an entirely plant based diet. It’s getting very complicated! Perhaps I should just do what you did and go online to find a raw food retailer.
      Thanks!
And yes, it was so exciting to see Stella! She was just so calm, hanging out, people watching. Adorable.

I did indeed. And she was so cute and well mannered! She just sat there all chill. I could have had my picture taken with her but I felt like such a geek. Then, of course, I regretted not just going for it!
